Everton manager Frank Lampard was pleased with his team’s narrow EFL Cup victory over Fleetwood Town.

Everton manager Frank Lampard expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance against Fleetwood Town in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.

The Toffees came into the match with just one point and two goals from their first three Premier League games.

Lampard used the opportunity to make seven changes to his starting lineup, giving big-money signing Amadou Onana his first start and senior debut to 18-year-old defender Reece Welch.

The only goal of the game at Highbury came just before the half-hour mark, when Everton took advantage of Fleetwood’s mistake and Demarai Gray converted from 14 yards out.

Lampard chose to give opportunities to academy players Lewis Warrington and Stanley Mills rather than build on the Merseyside club’s lead.

Lampard, on the other hand, was pleased with how his team finished, earning a place in the last 32.

Lampard said: “We played better in certainly two of our games and not got what we deserved. Tonight, the win is nice, parts of the performance I liked, individuals got minutes. We can improve, we can be a bit more intense.

“Moments when we could make a killer pass or take control of the game we were a little loose. It was a good test for us but in terms of our performance, I am not going to say it is amazing, but I’ve played in many of these types of games and I have been beaten. I know they are not easy.”
